Providing energy to meet the needs of households, communities, and industry in the Northwest Territories (NWT) is difficult, but critically important.
In the NWT, it is important to take a strategic approach to developing renewable energy sources. Production of energy through sources such as hydro and wind already provide important economic benefits. Expanding the use of these energy sources and developing wind, solar, and geothermal energy require planning and targeted investments.
In addition, energy efficiency allows the successes of renewable energy generation in the NWT to have a greater impact. Energy efficiency solutions are important in ensuring the strength of greenhouse gas mitigation efforts.
Strong partnerships are needed so the development of renewable energy resources benefits all northern residents, including Aboriginal governments, industry and community government. Community involvement is essential for developing locally available renewable energy sources.
