J. Michael Miltenberger is one of the longest-serving Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, serving the constituents of Thebacha since his election in October 1995. His re-election to the 17th Legislative Assembly will mark his fifth consecutive term.
Mr. Miltenberger served on the Executive Council of the 16th Assembly as Deputy Premier, Government House Leader, Minister of Finance, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities, Minister Responsible for Homelessness and the Minister Responsible for Seniors. During his time in the legislature, he has served in a number of other portfolios as well. Mr. Miltenberger also stood as Chair of the Financial Management Board and leads the Committees on Climate Change and Refocusing Government.
Born in Ottawa March 17, 1951, Mr. Miltenberger was raised in the Northwest Territories since 1962. He earned a B.A. (Sociology) from the University of Lethbridge and later recieved his certification as a Journeyman Carpenter through Arctic College in Fort Smith. Prior to his election to the legislature, Mr. Miltenberger worked for the GNWT and served as councillor and mayor for the Town of Fort Smith.
Mr. Miltenberger and his wife Jeri have one daughter, Michaela (Craig), and two grandchildren, Larissa and Jason.
