Environment Division Environment The Environment Division has a mandate similar to a provincial environmental agency. Programs include hazardous substances, waste management, air quality and environmental impact assessment and are delivered in conjunction with community Renewable Resource Officers.
Programs and Publications Hazardous Substances Program The Hazardous Substances Program is responsible for coordinating the department's response to spills of contaminants, ensuring continued operation of the NWT's 24-Hour Spill reporting telephone service, ensuring contaminated sites are cleaned up by the polluter, controlling the use of pesticide products through a system of permits, and participating in the review of land and water development proposals on federal and Commissioner's land which may affect the quality of the environment. Waste Management Program When a product can no longer be used for its intended purpose, it becomes a waste. Wastes may be either solid, liquid or hazardous waste. Through the Waste Management Program, advice and assistance is provided to generators on pollution prevention as well as the proper way to manage, store and dispose of wastes. Air Quality Program The Air Quality Program is responsible for monitoring the quality of the air and regulating activities which may emit contaminants to the atmosphere. The Air Quality Program also provides for northern participation in national and international air quality issues including global warming, depletion of the ozone layer, and the long range transport of airborne pollutants.
