Snow surveys

What are snow surveys?

The Government of the Northwest Territories maintains a small network of snow survey stations in the Northwest Territories for flood monitoring, forest-fire prediction and research purposes. The data are available by navigating to a region in the side bar, or from Water Resources at (867) 767-9234 or nwtwaters@gov.nt.ca.

Additional data for other sites near airports may be available from Environment Canada.

How is the survey done?

The Government of the Northwest Territories measures the volume of snow at the end of the season (April) at a network of survey sites. Values are converted to a snow-water equivalent (SWE), to enable annual data to be compared from one year to the next. An annual spring bulletin is distributed to various government agencies and industry to inform them of anticipated freshet conditions.

Partners include GNWT Lands (District Offices) and the NWT Power Corporation.
