Description:

To promote a cooperative approach to water management, the Governments of Canada, British Columbia, Alberta (AB), Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories (NWT) and Yukon signed the Mackenzie River Basin Transboundary Waters Master Agreement (Master Agreement) in 1997. The Master Agreement commits all six governments to work together to maintain the ecological integrity of the aquatic Management Agreements (Bilateral Agreements).

The NWT-AB Agreement was signed March 18, 2015. This report outlines highlights of the first year of implementation of the agreement.

This report contains implementation highlights of the inaugural year, 2015-2016.

State of Aquatic Knowledge for the Hay River Basin
Summarizes information about the basin setting, aquatic environment, trends over time, and current and future human activities that could affect basin and river health.
The Hay River Basin is a transboundary watershed, with its headwaters in British Columbia and Alberta, and its terminus at Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.

Description:

There is limited knowledge about the quality, quantity and location of groundwater near NWT borders in the Mackenzie River Basin. To understand gaps in knowledge, a report was completed to describe what is known about groundwater resources, uses and monitoring, along with potential impacts to groundwater. The report will support development of Groundwater Learning Plans. Development of these plans is a commitment in NWT transboundary water management agreements with Alberta and British Columbia for areas where there are moderate levels of existing or proposed development and/or areas considered vulnerable.

Description:

An evaluation of the current status and trends of water chemistry and flow in the Coppermine and Lockhart Rivers’ watersheds. Data was assessed for seasonal and spatial differences and temporal trends and compared to relevant guidelines. This assessment supports cumulative impact assessment of water quality and quantity in the North Slave region of the Northwest Territories, helps to address downstream community concerns, and supports the development of water quality objectives for trans-boundary agreements with Nunavut. The historic and existing monitoring programs in these watersheds was also evaluated to determine if the program was adequate for detecting potential spatial and temporal changes in water chemistry.
