Wildlife Management Information System (WMIS)

What's New!

WMIS Projects

The Wildlife Management Information System (WMIS) is the Government of Northwest Territory's online, geo-referenced wildlife database. WMIS provides a central repository where government staff, industry, and public can store and access standardized raw wildlife data to support the conservation and management of NWT wild species and their habitat.

The WMIS Statement Regarding Use of Data

WMIS stores raw data on the location and number of wild species and their habitats in the NWT. WMIS is supported by the Wildlife Division of the GNWT's Department of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR). By requesting access to, and using, WMIS data, you agree to comply with the terms and conditions set out in this document governing the use of  WMIS information.

How to request data

How to submit data

I. Guiding Philosophy

Data stored in WMIS is intended to support conservation and management of NWT wild species and their habitats. ENR has a responsibility to maintain the integrity of the WMIS database and to protect the species and habitats represented in the database.

II. Statement of Acceptable Use

Data will be provided to individuals and organizations for specific purposes related to conservation and management of NWT wildlife, including the review of development proposals. Redistribution of the data is prohibited. Data will not be provided to commercial firms for the creation of independent datasets.

Data stored in WMIS originate from multiple sources. Source credit will be given with any data distributed from WMIS, and this credit must be acknowledged by all users of the data.

Example Credit Format:

Reference Author(s). Reference Year. Reference Title. Retrieved month-day-year from the Wildlife Management Information System, Wildlife Division, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Government of the Northwest Territories. 2008.

III. Sensitive Data

Following accepted guidelines and standards, the locations of sensitive Endangered and Threatened species and their habitats will be kept secure. In all distribution and sharing of data such records will be clearly identified.

The specific locations of secured records are not to be published in any form without the express written consent of ENR or the WMIS administrator.

IV. Reciprocation of Data

As a recipient of data stored in WMIS, it is hoped you will submit any observations of wildlife occurrences that you record in association with the use of WMIS data.

Reciprocated data can be submitted within a properly formatted ‘WMIS Loadform’.

V. Disclaimer

Many areas in NWT have never been surveyed comprehensively, and the results of a data search of WMIS are not intended as a final statement on the presence, absence, or status of species within a given area, nor as a substitute for on-site surveys.

While every effort will be made to ensure that the information contained in WMIS is accurate and up to date, ENR and its agents and employees are not liable for any loss or damage arising directly or indirectly from the possession, publication, use of, or reliance on, that information. It is provided “as is” without express or implied warranty.

VI. Reserved Rights

ENR reserves the right to vary without notice any material placed in WMIS. Violations and non-compliance of conditions found within the Agreement may result in refusals of future data requests made to WMIS.

VII. Acknowledgment and Contact

You acknowledge having read the Database Release Agreement, and that your request and use of the data indicate that you agree to comply with these Terms and Conditions.

For questions or comments please contact the WMIS team.
