Water

Water is integral to the ecological, social, cultural and economic fabric and health of the Northwest Territories.   The Government of the Northwest Territories is responsible for managing drinking water in the NWT and the federal Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (INAC) is responsible for managing other water resources.

The Government of the Northwest Territories recognizes water is a renewable resource that, if managed wisely, will sustain the people and ecosystems for the NWT now and into the future.   The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, with INAC, is leading the the development of a NWT Water Stewardship Strategy.  The Strategy will guide efforts to protect water quality and quantity and deal with the cumulative impacts of developments on NWT water resources.
