Climate Change
The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) recognizes that it has a responsibility to contribute to Canada's efforts to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and is committed to working with governments and organizations to develop an equitable approach to Canada's international obligations. In November 2004 the GNWT reconfirmed its official position on climate change.
The NWT Greenhouse Gas Strategy 2011-2015 outlines the GNWT's plan and actions to control greenhouse gas emissions in the NWT for the next five years and beyond 2015. Reports supporting the new Strategy include: An Exploration into the Impact of Carbon Pricing in the NWT and Assessing Emission Reductions from Potential Climate Policies in the NWT.
Regardless of local and global efforts to reduce emissions, the NWT and other northern jursidictions need to continue adapting to climate change impacts. Canada's northern territories are working together on this issue. The Pan-Territorial Adaptation Strategy: Moving Forward on Climate Change Adaptation in Canada's North identifies six approaches to climate change adaptation. A Pan-Territorial Renewable Energy Inventory outlines current and future renewable energy resources in Canada's North.
Environment and Natural Resources helped to form the Arctic Energy Alliance to assist energy consumers reduce the costs and environmental impacts of energy and utility services in the NWT. The Arctic Energy Alliance administers energy programs on behalf of the GNWT with the assistance of the Climate Change Unit.
