Building Relationships - Building Knowledge

Where do we encourage youth to seek knowledge about their natural environment? Do they have the opportunity to learn through their own direct experience with the environment? Do they have the guidance of elders and skilled mentors? Do they have access to good information through print, audiovisual and electronic media? All are valid avenues of learning. Our challenge as educators is to provide a balance of opportunities that promote learning along each of these avenues and engage learners through all their senses.

In this issue of The WILD Times you will read about environment education programs from around the NWT. Many of these programs bring together diverse members of the community. They demonstrate that building relationships is integral to seeking and exchanging knowledge. Mentor relationships within these programs give youth access to the skills and experience of wildlife officers, guides, scientists and other community members. Relationships with elders provide links to the past, to the land and to a way of knowing.

Many elders are dedicated to teaching youth from all backgrounds about their culture. One of these elders from the Dogrib community, Johnny Eyakfwo, contributed much to the success of our Tundra Science Camp during the past three summers. Johnny passed away November 13, 1997 and we will miss him greatly.

"There are a lot of things that the elders are not aware of that the younger people have to deal with. Also keep in mind that there are a lot of things that we can share in terms of exchanging ideas and knowledge.

In this way, we want to develop a communication system that will enable both the old and the young to share their destinies together..."
